Tips to Overcoming Negative Thoughts

Tola sat by the window, staring at the rain trickling down the glass. Her mind was loud again—whispers of failure, fear, and self-doubt. ‘You’ll never be good enough. God is disappointed in you. You’ll always struggle’. The thoughts came like waves, threatening to pull her under.
She clenched her fists. Why do I keep thinking like this? She had prayed. She had fasted. But the thoughts always returned. She was exhausted.
Her Bible lay open on the table, untouched for days. With a sigh, she reached for it, flipping to a verse she had underlined long ago:
“Take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” (2 Corinthians 10:5)
Tola read it again, slower this time. Could it be that she had been letting these thoughts control her instead of fighting back?
She closed her eyes. Lord, help me. I don’t want to live like this anymore. I am exhausted and I doubt if I can continue thinking like this.
A thought rose in her mind: God has not given you a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7).
For the first time in weeks, she sat up straighter. That’s right. These thoughts are not from God.
The lies returned, but this time, she fought back. ‘God loves me. I am His. I am not a failure. I won’t always struggle. I am the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus’.
It wasn’t an instant victory, but she felt something shift—a small light breaking through the darkness.
She picked up her Bible and whispered, I will renew my mind daily with Your truth, Lord.
And in that moment, the battle didn’t seem so impossible anymore, because she knew God was her side.

Negative thoughts can be overwhelming and exhausting. They creep in unexpectedly—whispers of doubt, fear, or unworthiness that try to weigh us down. But as believers, we are not called to be held captive by our thoughts. God has given us the power to overcome them through His Word—God has given us all that pertains to life and Godliness.

Recognising the Source of Negative Thoughts
Many negative thoughts don’t originate from us; they are often attacks from the enemy. The Bible warns us:
“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.” (1 Peter 5:8, NKJV)
Satan knows that if he can control our thoughts, he can influence our actions, emotions, and even our faith. However, we are not defenseless. God has given us spiritual weapons to fight back.
Remember the mind is the battlefield, what you dwell on in your mind and believe can either make or mar your destiny.

Renewing Your Mind with God’s Truth
The key to overcoming negative thoughts is replacing them with God’s truth. Romans 12:2 tells us:
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” (NKJV)
Renewing our minds means intentionally filling our hearts with the truth of God’s Word. Instead of dwelling on lies, we meditate on His promises.
- When you feel unloved, remember: “I have loved you with an everlasting love” (Jeremiah 31:3).
- When you feel afraid, declare: “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7).
- When you feel hopeless, stand on: “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29:11).
Taking Every Thought Captive
2 Corinthians 10:5 reminds us:
“Casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.”
This means we don’t have to entertain every thought that enters our minds. We have the authority to reject lies and align our thinking with God’s truth. A practical way to do this is by speaking Scripture out loud. When a negative thought arises, combat it immediately with a Bible verse. Over time, your mind will be trained to reject lies and embrace God’s truth.
In Ephesians 6:10-20 we see the word of God is the only offensive weapon against the lies of the devil. The devil would stop at nothing to destroy you—he would fill your mind with dangerous lies and tell you they are the truth. Remember the devil is a liar. He is the father of all lies and there is no single truth in him (John 8:44). Everything he says and does against us is a lie. When he went to meet Eve in the book of Genesis, all he told her was a lie and unfortunately she believed him (Genesis 3:1-7).
When the devil tempted Jesus, Jesus did not argue with him but simply quoted the word of God and the devil left him—that is how powerful the word of God is (Matthew 4:1-11).

Practical Steps to Overcome Negative Thoughts
- Pray and Surrender – Ask God to help you recognize and overcome negative thoughts. Give Him your worries and fears in prayer.
- Guard Your Mind – Be mindful of what you consume. What we watch, listen to, and read affects our thoughts. Surround yourself with Godly influences.
- Replace Lies with Truth – Keep a list of Bible verses that counteract the negative thoughts you struggle with. Meditate on them daily. You can write out encouraging bible verses on sticky notes and paste them around your home. When you keep looking at it, your mind would accept the truth daily.
- Speak Life Over Yourself – Instead of repeating negative thoughts, declare God’s promises over your life.
- Trust God’s Process – Transformation takes time. Be patient with yourself and trust that God is working in you.

Final Encouragement
You are not alone in this battle. God is with you, and His Word is your greatest weapon against negative thoughts. No matter how persistent the enemy’s lies may seem, the truth of God is stronger.
Stand firm, renew your mind, and walk in the freedom that Christ has given you. You are loved, chosen, and victorious in Him.
Keep your mind on God, and His peace will guard your heart. Keep pressing forward—victory is already yours!

Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank you for the victory I have through the finished work of Jesus Christ on the Cross of Calvary. Help me to keep my mind stayed on you always. I don’t want to always struggle with negative thoughts. Help me with divine victory from the throne of grace, in a Jesus precious name, amen.
